09/01/09 2.00 My 97 Toyota Camry died without any warning. Just 5 yrs ago my engine was rebuilt (when it had 90,000 miles on it)by the Toyota dealer as it had a sluge problem. They gave me no hassle about the engine repairs as the car had been recall a few years before for sluge problems. Just 2 weeks ago when I thought it was running fine when the oil lite came on. I immediately pulled over checked my oil, which was full. I drove it home and decided to drive it a little more the next day. The car lost power and quit on me. I had it towed to the dealer were they side my engine was blown. No engine noise, no warning. Needless to say I was blown away. The body was in good repair and the leather interior was great. But I could never get rid of a problem I had with noise from struts, bearing s ..... i really don't know neither did the dealer; they never could find the problem and I just decided to continue to drive the car with the noise. I love the body style and the gas milage. But will never understand what happened after driving it for 53,000 miles after the engine was rebuilt and with no warning the car died and is now in the salvage yard . I could not afford to put the 3500.00 in it for a new engine and still have a noisie car. Oh yeah the sunroof cables broke 3 yrs back and the cost would have been 1200.00 to repair it. I will never buy another car without reading the consumer reviews.

10/26/04 1.00 Engine threw a rod during acceleration through laborious internet investigation found that "oil sludge" problem could cause the failure...however due to the previous owners extensive maintenance records (changed oil every 3000 miles!!!) and car only have 37000 miles, Toyota replaced the engine block and provided a car while the work was being done. They could not explain situation although I have heard of others with same situation who did not have records for proper oil changes and were denied any help from Toyota.
